The New Zealand Resuscitation Council has announced with deep sadness the passing of Dr. Tonia Nicholson, a highly respected emergency medicine specialist, educator, and international leader in resuscitation science. Dr. Nicholson passed away peacefully on 16 July 2026, at the age of 58, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that has shaped emergency care practices across New Zealand, Australia, and the wider global medical community.
For more than two decades, Dr. Nicholson served as a dedicated member of the New Zealand Resuscitation Council, representing the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). During her years of service, she held several key leadership positions, including Secretary and Treasurer, helping guide the Council’s mission to improve emergency care and lifesaving practices throughout the region.
Dr. Nicholson was widely recognized for her significant contributions to the development of evidence-based resuscitation guidelines. Her work on the ANZCOR Adult Advanced Life Support (ALS) Guidelines played a vital role in advancing emergency medicine standards in both New Zealand and Australia. Beyond her regional contributions, she spent more than a decade serving on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Advanced Life Support Task Force, where she helped influence global resuscitation practices and strengthen New Zealand’s presence in international medical research and policy development.
In recognition of her remarkable achievements, the New Zealand Resuscitation Council recently awarded Dr. Nicholson the prestigious Sir David Hay Medal, the organization’s highest honor. The award recognizes outstanding and lifelong contributions to resuscitation and emergency care in Aotearoa New Zealand, reflecting the immense respect she earned throughout her distinguished career.
While celebrated for her professional accomplishments, Dr. Nicholson was equally cherished for her devotion to family. She was the beloved wife of the late Grant, a loving mother to Lily, Lani, and Tom, a treasured daughter of Sue and Archie, and a beloved sister to Jennifer.
A funeral service celebrating Dr. Nicholson’s life will be held at Seddon Park Funeral Home, 49 Seddon Road, Hamilton, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24.
Her legacy of compassion, leadership, and commitment to saving lives will continue to inspire generations of healthcare professionals around the world. Dr. Tonia Nicholson’s contributions to medicine and emergency care will not be forgotten.
